R. Shanmugam learned photography from ‘Kalimamani’ award-winning Photographer yoga. He later worked as a freelance photographer for several magazines. He also went to the Earthquake hit state Gujarat and the photographs he took there were published in the famous weekly journal Kumudam, who later made him their magazine’s full-time photographer. In the eighteen years of his career in Kumudam, there has been no political leaders or film stars that he hasn’t clicked using his camera. His camera has captured DMK Leader M. Karunanidhi, Late Prime Minister J Theatricality, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan , Ajith, Vijay, and many others. For such a rare opportunity, he always remembers Jawahar Palaniyappan(Chairmen), Pa Varatharajan(Director), Ilangovan, Thiruvankimalai Saravanan(Chief Editor). In the year 2014, he traveled to Gujarat to capture the picture of the Prime Ministerial candidate and the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
